UCSD Department of Physics
I am involved in the Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer program sponsered by the National Science Foundation. The UCSD physics department picks about a dozen undergrads from all over the country. From these I like to pick incoming juniors who have taken quantum physics and have some expertise in Object Oriented Programming like C++. My group teaches the students every thing else !
Here is some reading material for the REU students planning to work with my group.1. Scientific American Book Particles and Forces:At the Heart of Matter Edited by Carrigan and Trower
2. The Particle Garden by Gordon Kane is a very readable book. Published by Helix Books.
3. The following articles published in the Scientific American magazine:
(a) A Flaw in a Universal Mirror: Robert Adair, Feb 1988
(b) Violations of Symmetry in Physics : Eugene Wigner, 1962, or 63 or 64, you will have to flip thru and find out!
(c) The Upsilon Particle : Leon Lederman, Oct 1978
(d) Particles with Naked Beauty : Mistry et al. July 1983
(e) The Silicon Microstrip detector : Litke and Schwartz, May 1995
(f) The Next Generation of Particle Accelerators : Robert Wilson, Jan 1980.
(g) The Number of Families of Matter : Feldman and Steinberger, Feb 1991
4. Some text book for learning Techniques in Experimental Particle Physics are :
(a) Techniques for Nuclear and Particle Physics Experiments : A How to Approach : by W.R.Leo, published by Springer-Verlag Read Chapters: 2, 3, 5, 6, 10 and any thing else you fancy in the book.
(b) Experimental Techniques in High Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics: Edited by Tom Ferbel. Read Chapter 1,2,6
(c) The Experimental Foundations of Particle Physics : Edited by Cahn and Goldhaber, published by Cambridge University Press. Tells you about the pioneering experiments in Particle Physics (you will appreciate it more after having taken a particle physics course).
